Spokesperson’s Office

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. Secretary of State and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi reaffirmed the strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance as the cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Secretary Rubio expressed his sincere condolences over the death of a Japanese citizen in Okinawa and said the United States is determined to communicate with the Japanese government and local authorities and fully cooperate with the investigation. The Secretary of State also proposed the need for the United States to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court because the court’s rogue behavior threatens U.S. sovereignty. He and Foreign Minister Motegi promised to continue close coordination before the G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta.
