A man reportedly fell to his death from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday, a gruesome scene captured in a commemorative photo.
Police confirmed that one person was killed and several others were injured in an incident involving the ride, but there was no immediate confirmation of how the deaths or injuries occurred.
“We are deeply saddened by the incident involving a visitor at the park today. We extend our deepest condolences to our guest’s family, friends and loved ones,” a Six Flags spokesperson said in a statement.
11Alive reported that the man had a child in the car. A witness on the roller coaster told the outlet he hit other passengers as he fell and landed on the roof of the haunted attraction.
“He’s in our pictures,” the witness said, referring to souvenir photos that can be purchased after the ride. “He fell three times and hit the car.” Witnesses said Six Flags rides staff checked seat belts before the ride began.
“The park team and local authorities responded immediately and we are cooperating fully with local authorities to complete their investigation,” a Six Flags spokesperson said.
The theme park added that it would not reveal further details “out of respect for the family’s privacy.”
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. and passengers were evacuated from the roller coaster.
The previous death while riding a Goliath occurred in 2006, when a 45-year-old man suffered an apparent heart attack. Authorities later inspected the roller coaster and found it was operating normally.
In August, The Daily Telegraph reported on another roller coaster, the X2, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, after a CNN investigation found the ride caused serious injuries and two deaths. Six Flags closed the X2 in July and announced in late September that it would permanently retire the ride after several lawsuits claimed the X2 caused brain damage.
