Anthropic reports third-quarter revenue, huge computing charges in revised S-1

Anthropic’s revenue is soaring. So does the cost of keeping Crowder running.

On Monday, the artificial intelligence company filed an amended version of its S-1, which disclosed its financials ahead of its highly anticipated initial public offering. The company submitted the original documents last week.

Monday’s revision included third-quarter figures that were not included in the initial filing: Anthropic generated nearly $17 billion in revenue during the period, an increase of more than $5 billion from the previous quarter and about 12 times annual growth.

But the computing required to drive growth is putting pressure on the business. Anthropic’s operating loss rebounded to $567 million in the third quarter after reporting operating income of $974 million in the second quarter.

Anthropic wrote in the filing that its third-quarter operating loss was “primarily driven by $5 billion in computational charges under short-term commitments,” which the company said were significantly higher than comparable multi-year arrangements, as well as $2 billion in non-cash charges related to its donation matching program.

The company also disclosed about $895 billion in committed spending on computing and infrastructure — nearly half of its projected spending by the end of 2030.

The company has not disclosed the IPO price range, number of shares or size of the offering.
