Trump met Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a private dinner at the White House

President Donald Trump and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday evening.

Trump confirmed the meeting to Fox News’ Aishah Hasnie.

It comes after AI firm leaders expressed concern this month about the technology’s risks, warning that the pace of its progress should be slowed.

“We need to slow down the pace at which we increase the capabilities of the AI model. Progress will still appear fast, and we need to use the time we gain wisely,” Amodei wrote in the essay.

Last week, Amodei spoke before the UN Security Council about the need for the AI industry to establish international standards and cooperation to manage the threats it poses. rapid development of AI and abilities.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon also resigned from the company earlier this month, arguing that the leading AI company was not acting responsibly as AI capabilities advanced rapidly.

“I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research in OpenAI and Anthropic. There is no company that acts responsibly. They are racing directly for self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” Jacob Coxon said on September 8.

Trump was asked by Hasnie about Amodei’s call to slow the development of AI.

“We’ll talk about it. I’m going to go and let’s win. We’re about a year, maybe half a year up in China. There’s no one in third place. It’s just us and China. We’ve led enough. I talked a little about it with President Xi. Not too much, it’s not a topic of conversation. I’ll talk to Dario and others,” said Trump.

Amodei was not among the tech industry leaders attending Thursday’s White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping, although the group included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Trump also said a broader White House meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson and AI executives is scheduled for Tuesday.

“We have a very big meeting on Tuesday where everyone is coming in and it’s going to be very important,” Trump told Hasnie.

Anthropic has been involved in a legal battle with the Pentagon over the technology company’s designation as a supply chain risk.

In a 2-1 decision on Friday, the appeals court sided with the Pentagon, allowing the department to continue designating Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” for Defense Department procurement purposes.

“Confirmed: @AnthropicAI = Supply Chain Risk. @DeptofWar is doing what’s right for our Country and our Heroes,” Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said on social media after the decision.
