President Donald Trump has shared images of debris and damaged buildings at a historic golf course in Washington, D.C., calling it a “trash island” amid a bitter legal battle over its future.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum unveiled design plans for a bold redevelopment of the East Potomac golf course on Sunday, but the future of the space remains controversial. The administration’s plan has prompted legal challenges amid concerns it failed to use a federal review and approval process.
Judge Ana C. Reyes presided over a hearing Monday morning in which she called on top Department of the Interior (DOI) officials to testify after hundreds of trees were cut down without notice a week ago.
Reyes disputed the government’s testimony that recent tree removals in the park were not connected to plans for a new golf course. “In any universe, all of this coincidentally happens at the same time,” Reyes said.
As the court proceedings continued, Trump hit back on the truth social network, sharing a series of photos of East Potomac Park, including dead trees, broken fences and flooded paths.
“Here are photos of Trash Island for review and study. It’s just a small area, but better than some!” Trump said in a post, along with a series of photos.
