The mother of an 8-month-old girl survived a fall of at least 15 stories after she was pushed off a Bronx balcony a day earlier, law enforcement sources said. Her condition was deemed stable Wednesday, authorities said.
At the same time, the police are still investigating whether the woman’s ex-boyfriend is related to the case.
Nathaly Ramirez, 23, was holding her daughter when the two were pushed from a balcony on Olinville Avenue in Allerton early Tuesday, law enforcement sources said. Sources said they fell from at least 15 stories.
Ramirez was pronounced dead at the hospital. The baby girl was transported there in critical condition and is improving, officials said. Authorities believe her mother’s body may have cushioned her fall.
Police said Ramirez’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
Detectives want to question the woman’s ex-boyfriend, but have not directly linked him to the morning’s tragedy or officially identified him as a suspect, law enforcement sources told NBC New York.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage as part of their investigation. Police sources said the video shows a man, believed to be the man’s ex-boyfriend, walking away wearing a hooded sweatshirt as police arrived on the scene.
The source added that Ramirez’s address has a history of domestic violence.
A witness who lives at the Alleville Arms apartment complex said she heard yelling in the middle of the night, and then the screams led to Ramirez’s body being discovered outside. A neighbor told NBC New York that she heard the young woman pleading with someone before jumping from the balcony with her children.
“I heard her yelling, ‘Please don’t do this. My baby. You know my baby is scared. Look at her face,'” the neighbor said. “Next thing you know, I heard her scream and then I saw something fall to the ground.”
No arrests have been made.
