Democrats lose support after Haley Stevens rejects El-Sayed and endorses Republican Mike Rogers

Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., crossed party lines on Sunday to endorse former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers’ candidacy for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, and some on the left have made it clear they disagree.

“Abdul [El-Sayed] Made it clear that I wasn’t welcome in his campaign, that he didn’t need me there, that he didn’t want me there. … I’m going to vote for Mike Rogers,” Stevens said. “We must stand with the country, we cannot stand with hatred, we cannot stand with Hassan Pique… I stand with my party, but I was booed on stage. “

Stevens expressed distaste for El-Sayed’s close ties to Hassan Pike, a communist streamer who hates America, and criticized El-Sayed’s recent ad featuring commentator Tucker Carlson.

Following Stevens’ endorsement, leftist Mehdi Hasan called her a “traitor” to the party on the X website, claiming anyone who had supported her in the past should re-evaluate everything.

“She is clearly a disturbed, unhinged, dishonest woman (less than 48 hours ago she swore to the New York Times that she supported Abdul), but the bigger question to ask is: How on earth did the Democratic establishment elect her as its candidate? A complete traitor to the party and now a Trump enabler? Centrist former Stevens supporters have a lot of soul-searching to do.

Stevens’ own staff resigned en masse, and her former chief of staff, Justin German, issued a statement on their behalf pledging allegiance to Democratic candidate Abdul-Sayed and saying they were “heartbroken” by her decision.

The Michigan Democratic Party released a joint statement from party Chairman Curtis Hertel and First Vice President Portia Robertson, both of whom called Rogers a threat to democracy as a whole because he was hand-picked by President Donald Trump.

Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Stevens’ fiancé, who announced her support for Rogers days earlier, was influencing her decision to appear with Rogers.

MS NOW host Chris Hayes commented: “Before all this madness, this campaign was a natural experiment in demonstrating the appeal of Bernie-style progressive politics in a contentious swing state race. But now, if El-Sayed loses, Stevens will transform himself into centrist Ralph Nader.”

Neera Tanden, a former White House official under President Joe Biden, added: “Siding with Mike Rogers is a betrayal of everything Haley Stevens has fought for her entire career. It is also a betrayal of all of her supporters who believed in her.”

MS NOW brought in Stacey Abrams to talk about Stevens shortly after the announcement, insisting she won the Georgia governor’s race despite receiving fewer votes than Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. Abrams, without irony, accused Stevens of acting out of “loser pain” and claimed she “used black people as props.”

El-Sayed himself, speaking shortly after Stevens endorsed his Republican opponent, made clear he would not discuss the issue: “If you ask me a question about two people who are not here, I’m not going to be very interested in answering it.”

Trump expressed support for Stevens and issued a statement on her behalf on his Truth social account.

“Wow, this is a big deal! Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a well-respected Democrat who narrowly lost her primary to Abdul Mohamed El-Sayed and was breathlessly drunk by Democrats to help them run for the U.S. Senate in Michigan against Sen. Mike Rogers, said. “Her following is vast and her level of respect from the people of Michigan, especially our African-American and Jewish populations, is almost unparalleled. Haley said things that few people are willing to say. She has shown an almost unprecedented level of loyalty to the great people of Michigan by what she has done. That’s called bravery, and Haley Stevens has it like that!”
