Donald Trump’s final speech for the 2026 midterm elections: Check out my reflection pool

Welcome to logout: Donald Trump won’t talk about anything as he wraps up the midterm elections.

What happened? If the polls are true, Republicans are one day away from catastrophically bad midterm election results and could lose control of both houses of Congress.

However, Trump has other things to think about. He gave his final midterm address Monday during a nearly hour-long news conference with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, in which he focused on the status of the newly reopened Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and his other D.C. construction projects, planned and ongoing.

“It’s a huge pool,” he said. “It’s been treated with a lot of love and then a lot of hate, and we need to stop the hate.”

What else did Trump say? Monday marked the culmination of the president’s bizarre campaign season, which has been filled with disjointed rants and musings about what’s next for incumbent Republican Sen. Jon Husted (among others).

Trump has also spent the past few months urging Americans to vote in the midterm elections as if he were on the ballot himself — but polls suggest he may be more of a drag than a boon to the Republican candidates in a close race.

What’s the big picture? We won’t know for sure how the midterm elections will play out until polls close on Tuesday night (and maybe not for some time after that, depending on the outcome of some key races).

Still, Trump briefly acknowledged on Monday that things were looking bleak for his party: “For some reason, the current president didn’t win the midterms,” he said, “but we gave that opportunity a very strong chance.”

That’s it, time to log off…

Although a few days late, I would be remiss if I didn’t share my colleague Ian Millhiser’s tribute to the late Patrick Stewart and his iconic character. StarCraft Plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard. You can read the full story here along with gift links.
