How much rain is expected in the New York area on Thursday and Friday? – NBC New York

The longest dry spell of the year in the tri-state is coming to an end.

Scattered showers will remain on Thursday, with heavy rain expected that evening and continuing into Friday as a cold front moves through the area.

Showers will begin in the area Thursday morning, well ahead of the front. It won’t rain all day and the showers will be light.

But if you don’t like gambling, just to be safe, bring an umbrella when you go out on Thursday.

A cold front will blanket the East Coast from Thursday night into Friday morning, with a band of deep atmospheric moisture ahead.

We are expecting rainfall along with thunder along the coast on Friday morning and will continue on and off throughout the day. Friday is definitely a day to bring an umbrella and a raincoat.

There won’t be any heavy rainbands inland, so rainfall totals will be light. Expect less than half an inch in most places.

The coast is another story. There is still a lot of uncertainty about where the bands of maximum rainfall will occur, and this key factor will determine whether we see a little or a lot of rain.

Currently, U.S. forecast models predict that heavy rain will barely hit our coasts. This means Long Island and the Jersey Shore could see 2-3 inches or more of rain Friday.

European forecast models track heavy rainfall entirely offshore, which brings coastal rainfall totals more in line with inland rainfall totals.

Forecasts of coastal rainfall are tricky because there can be sharp breaks between heavy and light rain, while an overall small eastward shift in the cold front’s position could push any heavy rain offshore – as is forecast for Europe.

Fortunately, we don’t expect severe weather on Friday. However, if these areas do get hit by heavy downpours, flooding is possible in these areas.
