iPhone Duo memes start trending as users report cracked screens

Apple’s long-awaited iPhone Duo is here, and while folding phones are nothing new, it’s the company’s first and the waiting list is already a mile long.

However, Apple diehards who already own a Duo are reporting problems with the folding screen, and some are posting feelings of buyer’s remorse online.

cracked screen

Early users are reporting cracks in the center fold of the Duo, sometimes accompanied by a bright line of stuck pixels on one side of the internal display. Apple said the issue affected “a small number” of devices and directed affected customers to AppleCare for a replacement.

The reports have also spawned crack-themed jokes and wallpapers online – although some widely shared images of damaged Duo screens have been altered or generated by artificial intelligence.

The One

In a statement to Business Insider, Apple said response to the iPhone Duo from early users has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“If users experience an issue with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement,” Apple said.

Crypto memes

The crypto world was linked to the iPhone Duo when the official Crypto.com account posted information in early October about how the foldable phone would suit traders.

The association quickly became a meme about the stereotype of crypto traders being paranoid and unemployed.

Multi-screen design

Many believe that the iPhone Duo’s multi-screen design will harm our already short attention spans by allowing multiple activities to be conducted simultaneously.

While the Duo’s 7.6-inch internal display supports running two apps side-by-side, its 5.4-inch external display can be used when the phone is closed.

The setting has also led to jokes about so-called “performing men,” in which men publicly pretend to like certain niche genres of books and music in order to attract women.

Another post, more an actual video than a meme, demonstrates the potential of the iPhone Duo to exacerbate doomscrolls.

For those worried that one screen won’t be enough to scroll through at night, Apple offers a $1,999 solution.
