Jeff Bezos links the appeal of socialism to affordability issues like the high cost of housing

Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos explained in an interview Wednesday why he thinks socialism is gaining traction among some politicians and voters, and what he thinks is wrong.

Bezos spoke on the factory floor of Blue Origin’s Space Coast facility with Fox News’ Bret Baier in an interview that aired on “Special Report” and was asked about the factors that lead some people to accept socialism.

“One, we have a real affordability problem. So people look at the cost of housing, for example, and it’s very expensive. And so you can’t pretend that there’s no problem,” said Bezos. “I don’t think we should underestimate the problem, but we also need to see what the real solution is.”

Bezos said that housing is an important example because it is “a place where a lot of government intervention has been counterproductive. Instead of working on real solutions, generally, in the case of housing, certain politicians point to landlords and say it’s the fault of greedy landlords.”

“That’s not what happened. Housing is a simple supply and demand situation. It’s economics 101,” he said, adding that “if you implement government programs that subsidize and limit supply, you’re going to get high prices.”

“If you can look at the counterexample, which is Austin, where over the last 10 years they have implemented many policies designed to make it easier to build houses, and they have house prices down in Austin,” Bezos said.

He added that when voters fill out their ballots, they should consider whether politicians are more focused on providing solutions to problems or pointing fingers to blame their opponents.

“If a politician chooses a criminal and points the finger, it means that he does not have a solution. Because if it is a solution, instead of blaming others, he will work on the solution,” said Bezos.

The founders of Amazon and Blue Origin added that if someone in one of the companies came to the meetings and “instead of trying to find the root cause and fix the root and real solutions to the problem, all they do is point the finger and blame people, we will get out quickly. Those people will not last long in our company.”

Bezos was also asked about the criticism of billionaires made by political figures on the left of the ideological spectrum, and his retreat from the mentality of making successful businessmen criminals.
