Mark Cuban says Split Rent with 5 Roommates at 24. Here’s his Math.

Mark Cuban may own several million dollar properties today, but he started his career in a cheap shared apartment.

A former billionaire “Shark Tank” investor has opened up about the broken student mindset that ruled his 20s and helped him launch his first business, MicroSolutions. In X’s post on Sunday, he knows how to be frugal.

Cuban said that at the age of 24, he was living in an apartment in Dallas that is now worth $2,388. He says he shares it with five roommates, and his share of the rent will be $400 in 2026.

He showed me the floor plan of an old apartment in a complex called “The Village”. The floor plan shows a three bedroom layout with two bathrooms, dining room, living room, and kitchen. A total of 1,350 square feet.

“Tbh, I don’t mind living with 5 roommates. We’re all in the same boat,” he wrote. “I moved in when I was 24. Lived there or on the street for 2 years before I only needed one roommate.”

She told Forbes in a 2013 article that when she last moved into an apartment, she had no bed, dresser, or closet, and was sleeping on the floor with her clothes piled in the corner.

Cuban’s post about his former apartment is one of his take on the cost-of-living crisis in the US. He was responding to comments asking how people who work at McDonald’s can afford rent and other living expenses.

In a previous post, he wrote about working as a barback earning $2.15 an hour, living off canned food and happy-go-lucky nuts, and getting fired from his regular retail job.

“If it’s not the lifestyle for you. So, if you don’t think just getting any job to start is the right career choice for you. What you think is right,” wrote the 68-year-old Cuban.

Kuba often posts advice to early-career professionals at X on topics such as what company to work for as a fresh AI graduate, how to live frugally, and questions to ask when deciding whether to stay or leave a company.
