A shooting on a Monterey County beach just after midnight Monday left several people dead and several others injured, officials said.
Details have not been released, but the Monterey County Sheriff said in a statement that deputies and detectives were called to Moss Landing State Beach in response to a shooting.
“Multiple deaths and injuries have been confirmed,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
It was unclear how many people were killed or injured.
California State Parks Police closed Pier Road and Moss Landing State Beach during the investigation.
Sheriff’s officials said there is no apparent threat to the community. A spokesman for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
