New ‘national security risk’ warning about Michigan Democrat Syed

Republican senators say Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul-Sayed’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood pose a “national security risk.”

“if [Abdul El-Sayed] Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz said in the latest podcast that “American service members would be at serious risk of being killed” if El-Sayed was appointed to the Classified Materials Committee.

Cruz has pushed to designate the U.S. branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization. His bill, the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2025, has the support of 11 senators, including Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, but it has been stuck in the Senate for more than a year. The bill requires the State Department to determine whether each branch of the Muslim Brotherhood meets certain criteria. The department must then notify Congress of its findings, and the president must designate the chapter.

The State Department’s department-by-department assessment spans the globe and includes regions outside the United States, including the United Kingdom, France and Canada. Earlier this year, the Trump administration designated the Muslim Brotherhood’s affiliates in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan as terrorist organizations.

“I fully support designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization. They have spent decades spreading radical Islamic extremism, threatening the security of the United States and trying to wipe Western civilization off the map,” Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT), a former Navy SEAL, told The Daily Telegraph.

“Abdel-Sayed’s ties to this organization raise serious national security concerns. As senators, we have access to some of our nation’s most sensitive classified information, and I have serious concerns about the security risks posed by anyone associated with such an organization serving in the Senate,” added Sheehy, a member of the Armed Services Committee.

National security warnings against El-Sayed also emerged on the Michigan campaign trail Wednesday morning, when El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, released an ad blasting “El-Sayed’s ideology” as a “threat to our national security.” The ad mentions the Democrat’s family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Internal Brotherhood documents seized by the FBI reveal that the Brotherhood’s goal in North America is to launch “a grand jihad to annihilate and destroy Western civilization from within and to ‘destroy’ its miserable homeland through their own hands and those of their followers, thereby annihilating Western civilization and making the religion of God triumph over all other religions.” Since 1991, the Brotherhood and its “friends” have run at least 29 US organizations.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been designated a terrorist organization by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

“The Muslim Brotherhood is an organization committed to terrorism. I fully support designating it as a foreign terrorist organization. Many of our allies have already done so,” Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) told The Daily Telegraph. “Abdel-Sayed and others with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood are not eligible to serve in the U.S. Senate.”

The bill would also ban fraternity members from obtaining visas.

El-Said has struggled to answer reporters’ questions about his ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Despite well-documented ties between El-Sayed’s family and the Muslim Brotherhood, he told NBC reporters that he and his family have no such ties to the group.

The bipartisan bill also chokes off the financing networks of fraternities and their affiliated organizations.

“No matter where the Muslim Brotherhood operates, we see one constant: support for terrorism that directly threatens U.S. interests. The administration was right to designate three of its affiliates in January, and S.2293 will provide additional tools to sanction this terrorist organization,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) told The Daily Telegraph. “No one with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood has the right to serve the American people in Congress. If there is credible evidence, the Senate Ethics Committee should use all available resources to investigate any senator who betrays his oath of office.”

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) also supports the bill.

“This bill rightly directs the Secretary of State to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization and impose strict sanctions on them and their agents who chant ‘Death to America,’ sending a clear message that their anti-Western agenda and threats to the American people and our allies will not be tolerated,” Cornyn said.

Cruz introduced versions of the bill in 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2021.

Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID), chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee where the bill currently sits, is not co-sponsoring the bill, and his office did not respond to a request for comment.
