BACC is not a single gallery but Bangkok’s main public art center, combining public exhibition spaces, privately run commercial galleries and shops selling crafts, prints, antiques, musical instruments, handmade jewelry, clothing and more. The foundation-run institution at Pathumwan Junction opened in 2008 after 17 years of promotion by artists and supporters of Thai culture. Because it stems from this collective activity, it is not tied to any single name, and its mission feels more public-facing: to connect local art with international audiences, international contemporary art with a wide range of Thai art, support creative learning, and make Bangkok a city more open to art in a variety of mediums, from classic paintings to comics, photography, installation, and mixed media. BACC’s programs are not limited to exhibitions but also include performances, films, lectures and other interdisciplinary events. The building is a landmark. Designed by Robert G. Boughey and Associates, it is a circular, flowing, multi-story structure organized around a circular atrium with spiral ramps and overhead skylights. Commercial galleries are located on floors seven to nine, while the lower floors house the main exhibition spaces (especially the ground floor and basement), shops, auditoriums, studios and art library.
