Trump calls for early midterm elections in Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump voted Saturday in the midterm elections, saying before speaking at a rally in Georgia that he voted for all Republicans in Florida.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump arrived at a West Palm Beach polling place at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office after the president spent the morning at a nearby golf course. Trump has been criticized in the past for voting by mail, although he has long opposed this method of submitting ballots.

Asked if he voted along party lines, Trump, wearing an “I Voted” sticker, said: “Very much so.”

Speaking to reporters at the polls, Trump once again defended an ad by Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The ad faced backlash for featuring the estranged mother of Democratic rival Dr. Amy Acton. Dr. Amy Acton lost custody of her children after her husband, the children’s stepfather, was indicted for raping Acton when she was 12 years old.

Trump also defended his decision to direct his administration to file a lawsuit to block the certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan failed to put a second candidate named Dan Sullivan on the ballot.

As for the Iran war, he said, “I might have to end it. Or maybe they’ll make a deal, but I’m not sure. Either way, we’re going to win.”

Melania Trump brokered a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine this week in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oreshki to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered and civilians to be evacuated. She was asked about the possibility of traveling to Ukraine.

“We’ll see,” she told reporters.

In Florida, Trump endorsed Republican Rep. Byron Donalds to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running against Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat David Jolly.

He also campaigned for Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, who is running for Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s first two-year Senate term against progressive state Rep. Angie Nixon.
