Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that its military will soon begin using an artificial intelligence model co-developed by NATO to predict where and when Russian drone strikes will occur.
The ministry said in a statement that the tool, known as “Model 13,” will analyze past battle data, weather conditions and battlefield conditions to determine “with a high probability” how Russian forces will use drones on the front lines.
The model can predict the timing, location, intensity and type of drone used of an attack, the ministry said.
“The solution has been validated using real-world data sets. It has been refined and is ready for integration into the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ situational awareness systems,” its statement read.
The ministry said Model 13 was developed by its armed forces and NATO’s Allied Command Transformation Center with support from the Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre, an organization created by NATO in late 2024 to help it innovate based on lessons learned from war.
ACT and JATEC did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment outside normal business hours.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that another artificial intelligence model No. 32 for planned artillery deployment is also being co-created. However, the Ukrainian army is still testing prototypes of this model.
Ukrainian officials said in February that since last year their forces had been using artificial intelligence and machine learning models to process combat data from the war to conduct “threat predictions.”
Model 13 will likely run on Ukraine’s DELTA battlefield management system, a digital application that combines intelligence from drones, cameras and battlefield reports to give commanders an overview of the front line via a tablet or mobile phone.
The system already uses an artificial intelligence module called Vezha, which Ukraine says can automatically detect and flag Russian equipment in seconds by analyzing satellite imagery, drone camera feeds and radio signals.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that the number of DELTA users exceeded 200,000 in November.
