Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., revealed on Friday that she is cancer-free after starting treatment for breast cancer earlier this year.
“I’m finally cancer-free,” Trump, 48, said in a video posted by his daughter Kay Trump, who leaned in to hug her mother after she announced the news.
Kay Trump wrote in the video’s caption that they wanted to share her story in part to help raise awareness.
“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about early detection, education and support for those living with breast cancer,” she wrote.
Vanessa Trump was married to the president’s eldest son from 2005 to 2018. They have five children, 19-year-old Kai Trump being the eldest.
Kay Trump said she and her mother sat down with radiologist Dr. Nicole Safire, a former Fox News medical contributor, to discuss breast cancer prevention and early detection.
“When it comes to breast cancer, it’s not one size fits all. It feels different for everyone,” Safire, President Donald Trump’s third nominee for surgeon general, says in the video.
Vanessa Trump first shared the news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer on May 20, although she said in a video on Friday that she was diagnosed in April.
Trump said in a May post that she was working with her medical team on a treatment plan and underwent surgery earlier this week. In an update next month, Trump said she had been recovering from surgery for the past four weeks and expected to begin the second phase of treatment soon.
In recent years, breast cancer rates have grown faster in women under 50 than in older women, prompting the recommended screening age to drop from 50 to 40. According to the American Cancer Society, about 16% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are under the age of 50.
