Democrat Troy Jackson won election to represent Maine in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, defeating Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

Jackson, the former Maine Senate president, took over as the Democratic nominee in July after primary winner Graham Plattner dropped out. He’s tasked with defeating longtime Democrats after a chaotic primary season that left the party in disarray and briefly without a candidate.
Democrats see this race as a prime opportunity to flip Republican seats. Maine has supported Democrats running for president since 1992, and Collins is running for re-election at a time when President Trump is deeply unpopular.
The Associated Press declared Jackson the winner at 1:02 a.m. ET. Collins earlier lost to Jackson, ending her sixth term.
