The Washington Roundtable weighs in on how Donald Trump’s rampant corruption will play out in the polls. Despite conventional wisdom in Washington that corruption does not impress voters, Democrats have spent more than three hundred million dollars on ads depicting the president’s self-enrichment as a tax on others. They are joined by former Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter to discuss what, if anything, can be done about corruption in the federal government and why criminal prosecutions may not be the most effective tool in fighting corruption. Officials must find ways to make corrupt people pay dearly, Slaughter argued. Slaughter said that while few Americans expect those in power to face consequences, “the only way to change that impression … is to start making people pay.”
