A mass shooting at a Halloween party near the University of Delaware on Saturday night left at least six people injured and sent costumed college students fleeing amid the chaos.
Police were called to a crowded area in downtown Newark, Del., just after 11 p.m.
Witnesses said that the streets were crowded with people celebrating Halloween when multiple gunshots suddenly rang out and the frightened crowd dispersed.
“People were running, screaming. There were helicopters flashing lights at people,” witness Jayden Ngalim told NBC Philadelphia.
“People were speeding down the road. It quickly became chaotic,” he added.
Another witness said he heard a pop before people began to take cover.
“I was right around the corner and all we heard was a sharp crack. Everybody, we thought it was a car at first and then everybody started running,” said Nathaniel Davila.
A third witness, Landon Singleton, described rushing toward one of the victims, taking off his shirt and pressing it against the gunshot wound.
“He held my hand tightly like it was his last hope,” he said.
Just before 11:30 p.m., the university issued an emergency alert, notifying students and others of the incident and warning them to avoid the area.
All six victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment, and their conditions were unknown as of Sunday morning.
No arrest or suspect details have been released yet.
