Abdulrahman Said, the Muslim left-wing U.S. Senate candidate in Michigan, said during a debate on Thursday that he would vote to stop providing defensive weapons to Israel if it were attacked by Iran or other state actors.
asked debate moderator, longtime political reporter and WOOD TV8 veteran reporter Rick Albin Whether El-Sayed would vote to provide Israel with defensive weapons if Israel were “attacked tomorrow by Iran or other state actors.” Said did not answer “yes” or “no,” but essentially said he would not vote to help Israel defend itself against hostile enemies because he did not believe taxes “buy weapons for other countries.”
“I’ve made it very clear. I want our tax dollars to be spent on here Schools are provided here…I want to make sure we have good schools here and healthcare here. I want to make sure we take care of people here. This is my top priority,” El-Sayed said.
“You know, you asked a hypothetical question about being attacked by Iran, but let’s be honest about what’s going on here. Israel is pushing us to go to war in Iran. Of course, my colleagues think everything goes to war. And here we are. Israel has clear war goals. They want us to go to war with them, and what is their war goal? To annex southern Lebanon?
Albin again pressed him for concise answers, asking if Said would “provide defense weapons to Israel”?
“I don’t want our tax dollars to buy weapons for other countries,” the Democrat responded. “I don’t know what’s so hard about it.”
“That’s a no,” Albin concluded.
Said later said during the debate in Grand Rapids that Iran and Israel – America’s top allies in the Middle East – “both pose dangers in their own ways.”
