Amazon confirmed on Wednesday it had cut what it said were a number of jobs, particularly in its Stores unit that oversees its main e-commerce website.

The layoffs at the retail unit coincided with one of Amazon’s biggest shopping days, called Prime Big Deal Days. The promotion starts on Tuesday and runs until Wednesday, offering various discounts.

The latest cuts follow larger job cuts

The cuts are the latest in a series of smaller reductions since a larger cut of 30,000 layoffs that began last year and continued through January. Some of the affected employees reached out to Reuters and shared a post from their internal Slack channel about the news.

Amazon is laying off fewer than 1,000 white-collar workers, people familiar with the matter said. Business Insider previously reported the layoffs.

“We have adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better allow us to implement our priorities,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Employees in the US, India and the UK are affected

An internal Slack channel suggests several divisions within the Store are involved, including customer service and selling partner services, and possibly other units within Amazon. Employees in the US, India and the UK are among those who got pink slips.

Bezos cited pandemic-era overhiring

Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and chief executive, said in a Fox News interview that aired Wednesday that job cuts continue to be necessary because the company is overhired during the pandemic. “People are staying at home and they’re ordering, and it’s an incredibly, stressful time for us,” he said when asked about the 30,000 jobs lost in the previous round.

“The whole team has been working hard and doing a lot, but we are increasing our head count.”
