Russian airstrikes killed at least 15 people, including three children, in Ukraine’s Zaporozhye region, officials said on Saturday.
The attack came a day after President Trump announced a deal to buy Russian diesel that Kyiv warned would help fund Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Russian aerial bombs struck residential buildings in Zaporozhye, the head of the Zaporozhye Regional Military Administration Mikhailo Semikin said on Saturday. Ivan Fedorov, co-chairman of the region’s defense committee, said at least 16 people were wounded in the attack.
Russia and Ukraine The two countries have been locked in a long-range air battle since Moscow’s full-scale invasion, while their armies remain largely deadlocked on the front lines. Ukraine is trying to fight back Russian bombing escalates More than 60 people have died in the past four days.
“Today, Russia dropped five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporozhye, expressing gratitude for the lifting of diesel export sanctions,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X on Saturday.
He said the attacks showed Moscow understood “any relief in pressure means they can keep fighting, which means they can keep dropping bombs on cities”, adding that “a different signal is needed”.
The latest attack comes after Mr Trump said he had attacked a Agreement to obtain diesel from RussiaThe shock comes as the United States has been pressuring Moscow for years over its war with Ukraine and trying to address high oil prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
Trump said on social media on Friday that he reached an agreement during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he is expected to discuss suspected plague cases in Russia.
Instead, the US president announced that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons “immediately thereafter.”
“Additionally, depending on the status of its diesel refineries, Russia will deliver 3 million tons of diesel at short notice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump’s shocking announcement contrasts with the sweeping Russia sanctions law he signed last month, which seeks to limit oil and gas revenues that fuel Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced on Friday that it would temporarily waive sanctions on Russia’s energy sector to “allow Russian diesel to be supplied to global markets.”
In Kiev on Saturday, people gathered at the monument to fallen soldiers in Independence Square to greet the deal with anger and resignation.
“Trump showed his true colors again,” said 26-year-old Oleksandr Petrenko. “He doesn’t care about the situation, the shelling or the destruction of our homes. He only cares about the price of oil or fuel and how much Americans have to pay.”
“Knowing Trump, he’s trying to manipulate the market. He’s going to have an election soon,” Petrenko said. “So he needs to stress to voters that gas will be cheap. But that’s not going to be effective.”
Zelensky published a lengthy online post on Friday targeting the deal, saying Russia would retaliate “with further terror and perfidy.” He saw it as an investment in the war, allowing it to be prolonged.
“This plays into Russia’s hands – to kill more people, have longer wars, show less respect for the United States, and cause greater loss and damage to the world,” he said.
Zelensky called it “a weak decision, unfortunately made by a strong partner,” according to a statement from Ukraine’s embassy in Washington.
When Trump announced the deal, his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner were meeting with Ukrainian officials in Miami to discuss proposals to end the war.
“I think our team is just being used as a smokescreen. It’s certainly not fair. It’s certainly not how partners should treat each other,” Zelensky said.
