Members of the Democratic Socialists of America are facing a political confrontation with the only Democratic head of the agency in the Trump administration.
Comrades on the far left are outraged that National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy was too cozy with Republican lawmakers during the midterm elections.
During a virtual DSA meeting of election committee members on Oct. 19, which focused on tight Senate races in Alaska and Texas, some representatives lost their temper with Homendy, but it irked even congressional Democrats, sources said Sunday.
“[The extremists’] The long-term goal is to have only DSA members in government positions,” one Washington, D.C., Democrat fumed.
Homendy, a Connecticut native, has been appointed to the National Transportation Safety Board multiple times since 2018 by Republican President Trump and Democratic former President Joe Biden.
She appears to have supporters on both sides of the political aisle, with many viewing her as a straight-shooter whose job is to investigate accidents rather than engage in partisan politics.
But activists’ complaints include:
- Homendy “never faulted Trump for the January 29, 2025, mid-air collision between a jet and a military helicopter over the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport in Washington.”
- On July 31, she attended an aviation safety summit in Anchorage with Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who is in a tight race with Democratic rival Mary Peltola. Trump is working to save Sullivan’s campaign.
- Homendy has a friendly relationship with Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.
- Homendy “supported” MAGA members in the House of Representatives, including Wisconsin Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden.
“I suspect the DSA’s efforts to ‘drive out’ Democrats with Republican ties will expand in 2027,” said a Washington Democratic insider.
“I can tell you: [Homendy] In fact, the NTSB does not pay any attention to political parties, and if the NTSB became politicized in any way, it would be the end of aviation and transportation safety in the United States. “
Homendy declined to comment.
DSA representatives said they are investigating the matter.
The DSA is on the rise, especially after one of its members, Zohran Mamdani, won the mayoralty of New York City, the largest city in the United States, last year.
DSA candidates have also won more congressional primaries this year, with democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez testing the waters for a 2028 run for U.S. Senate or president.
