A fatal shooting occurred Thursday night in Mar Vista, police said. A man with a head injury was removed from a Culver City bus after the shooting, according to witnesses.
According to police, multiple bullets were fired during the incident and a man in his 40s was killed. The suspected gunman is currently at large.
The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. near the intersection of South Centinella Boulevard and Mitchell Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Charles Miller said.
Multiple media reports said the victim was a bus driver. Police declined to release details about the victim to The Times late Thursday other than her age and gender.
“This loss is deeply personal to our Culver City bus team and will be felt throughout our entire city organization,” Culver Mayor Freddy Puza said in a statement shared with The Times. He called the incident a “senseless act of violence.”
Katty Garcia, who lives near the shooting scene, told The Times she heard three gunshots, went outside to investigate and then saw the man being pulled from the bus.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Garcia said.
She expected to see a car crash. Instead, she was greeted by a scene that “didn’t look good at all” – paramedics performing CPR on a man who had been shot in the head, she said.
The suspect, a white male, fled the scene on a bicycle, according to police.
The victim was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
The case is being handled by the department’s Western Homicide Bureau.
Culver City Bus officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Puza said Culver City bus service will be suspended throughout the weekend to allow the transit agency’s team time to grieve.
“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and colleagues during this devastating time,” Puzha said.
