Home Design Rules You Shouldn’t Follow, According to Interior Designers

Flip through any shelter magazine, and you’ll see open shelving as an essential kitchen feature.

Open shelves are great, they often break up the walls of cabinets, making the kitchen lighter and more open while creating a place to display dishes, glassware, cookbooks, or other personal items that you collect.

Although I was also drawn to open the shelves, I question whether it is the right choice for each client. Stylish shelves require you to decide what stays visible, maintain a certain order, and deal with kitchen dust and dirt.

For some people, it doesn’t matter – or even fun. For others, it’s another thing to keep.

Before my client made this design choice, we talked about what would live on the shelves and whether they wanted to be responsible for keeping it looking the way they envisioned it.

After all, trends can show you new possibilities, but they can’t tell you if those possibilities are right for your life.
