Four-term Republican Rep. Kevin Hern won Oklahoma’s U.S. Senate race Tuesday night, giving the party an already red seat, NBC News and Decision Desk HQ projected.
Hearn launched his campaign less than two hours after polls closed at 7 p.m. Central time, with nearly 70% of the votes counted. When the fight was announced, Hearn was leading his opponent, N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, 59.4% to 37.1%.
Hearn, who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump and has represented Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District since 2018, faces Thomas, a self-described socialist, nurse and active-duty military spouse who is running for public office for the first time.
Hearn and Thomas are competing to fill the seat of former Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), who left the post after being confirmed as President Trump’s homeland security secretary.
Before running for Congress, Hearn worked as an aerospace engineer and owned a McDonald’s franchise. He ran on an “America First” platform.
republican party hold Senate 53-47. Democrats need four elections on Election Day, and they need to hold on to all the seats they already hold to gain a majority.
