Man shot to death after altercation at Midtown Manhattan subway station, police say

A man was shot and killed during an argument at a subway station in Manhattan’s Theater District on Saturday, according to police.

Police said officers responded to a report of a shooting at the 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue subway station around 12:21 p.m. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m.

The station serves midtown Manhattan, an area crowded with tourists and theatergoers.

Authorities withheld the victim’s name pending notification of his family and said he was “possibly” in his 30s.

Police are looking for a man in connection with the shooting. The man approached the victim on the northbound E train platform, shot him in the chest and fled on foot, the NYPD said in a statement.

At a press conference, police said the altercation between the two men moved from the platform to the train and then back to the platform. Investigators are still determining the location of the shooting, police said at the briefing.

Police said the shooting was not a random act.

MTA Chief Safety Officer Michael Kemper said the perpetrators “should face maximum consequences from the justice system.”

“Fortunately, no one was injured outside of the fight,” he added.

Yellow police tape blocked the entrance to the Seventh Avenue subway station Saturday afternoon.
