Midtown Subway Killer Surrenders to Police, Sources Say – NBC New York

A 26-year-old man from the Bronx was arrested in connection with a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan subway station, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case said Thursday.

Sources said the 17-year-old surrendered to police accompanied by his lawyer.

Authorities have been trying to track him down for days since Saturday’s brazen shooting at West 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue. Darrel Rodriguez of University Heights was shot in the chest and died.

Authorities said the shooting began when the two men got into a fight on the platform. Police said the fight at some point moved into subway cars and then back to the platform, but it was unclear exactly where the gunfire erupted.

One passenger described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing people rushing out of the station.

“We just went in and sat down… all of a sudden, I heard a gunshot… and there was a mass escape. Everybody started running out, and there were at least three other people.”

Rider advocates condemned the violence, saying the clash took place at midday and involved hundreds of riders who were too close to each other.

“Our elected officials, our city, everybody has failed us and you know who’s suffering? All these poor riders like me,” said Charlton DeSouza of Passengers United.
