A rare hearing will take place at City Hall on Monday as the full committee prepares to grill some top tech executives on the risks posed by artificial intelligence.
The safety and future of artificial intelligence are the focus of an 11 a.m. hearing, where committee members plan to question technology leaders about potential dangers while developing legislative proposals to keep New Yorkers safe.
In recent weeks, artificial intelligence executives and whistleblowers have issued serious warnings about the rapid development of the technology. There have also been reports of rogue AI agents compromising government databases.
Leading artificial intelligence experts will be in attendance, with representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta also slated to testify. The committee also subpoenaed Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI.
“Given the high stakes at stake, these companies have an obligation to the public to come to Parliament, answer our questions and provide input under oath on our proposed legislation,” Parliamentary Speaker Julie Menin said in a statement last week.
She said the New York City Council has introduced 10 pieces of legislation aimed at creating stronger safeguards and accountability, as well as the nation’s first whistleblower incentive program to enable New Yorkers to report companies that don’t comply with the law.
Speaker Menin is expected to host a news conference at 10 a.m., with the council hearing starting about an hour later.
