Nicolas Cage says he’s ‘kind of homeless’ as sinkhole swallows up his Malibu home

Nicolas Cage says he’s “kind of homeless” after a sinkhole swallowed part of his Malibu home.

Speaking about his Halloween plans at Los Angeles Comic-Con over the weekend, Cage said he’s “kind of homeless right now.”

“Something happened at my house in Malibu,” he said, according to a fan video of the group. “So, I’m just staying in a hotel, so I don’t have the normal trick-or-treating that I want to enjoy tonight.”

In September, a massive sinkhole formed in the driveway of Cage’s home on the Southern California coast. At the time, authorities were investigating what caused the sinkhole to open.

City officials said the sinkhole also caused a gas leak, but no one was injured.

The video shows a huge crater in the home’s driveway that appears to have swallowed everything above it. It was unclear from aerial imaging whether there was any damage to the home itself.

According to an emergency advisory issued by the city of Malibu, the sinkhole began to form on September 7 and was fully exposed on September 8, with a depth of 25-30 feet and a width of 30 by 60 feet.

Seven properties have been “red tagged” due to dangerous conditions caused by sinkholes, and a further 24 properties have been “red tagged” “due to the loss of safe vehicle access,” the announcement said. Natural gas service is shut down in the area.

The next day, the city said repairs would be carried out by the housing association that controls the area. The company said it expects repairs to be completed within five weeks “subject to circumstances.”

A representative for Cage did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment. It was unclear how long he had been away from home and when he would be able to return.

The city of Malibu has not released any further information about the sinkhole and did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
