The regulator is opening an investigation into whether energy groups are complying with rules on treating customers fairly and supporting vulnerable households.
Ofgem has launched an investigation into whether Scottish Power is complying with regulations on the fair treatment of customers and support for vulnerable households.
The regulator will examine whether Scottish Power complies with license requirements relating to the fair treatment of domestic customers, including those in vulnerable situations, as well as support for those struggling to meet their energy bills.
It will also examine the company’s compliance with restrictions on customer backbilling for energy consumed more than 12 months ago, along with engagement with the Priority Service Register, which provides additional assistance to certain vulnerable customers.
The opening of an investigation does not mean that Ofgem has made any findings of non-compliance with Scottish Power.
An Ofgem spokesman said: “Ofgem expects suppliers to treat customers fairly and with respect, including ensuring accurate billing and appropriate support for people in vulnerable situations.
“An investigation into Scottish Power has been opened and we will report our findings once all relevant evidence has been assessed.”
Scottish Power has been contacted for comment by the Press Association.
