Polygamy? The left’s latest attack on marriage

The New York City Council is weighing a bill that critics warn could pave the way for full legal recognition of polygamy.

The bill was pushed by left-wing MP Int. 0242-2026, which seeks to incorporate “family or relationship structures” directly into the New York City Human Rights Code. The proposal, spearheaded by Congresswoman Crystal Hudson, would enact protections for unconventional arrangements, including polygamy and polyamorous families.

Polygamy is allowed in much of the Islamic world and has become a popular trend on the left.

The bill states, “The term ‘family or relationship structure’ means participation or non-participation in any romantic, physical, or emotional relationship that is not prohibited by any applicable law, regardless of the number of persons in the relationship, such as a non-monogamous family or relationship, a single-parent family, a stepfamily, or a multigenerational family.”

The bill recreates the nightmare scenario explained by conservative Supreme Court justices in 2015. Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), in a Supreme Court case legalizing same-sex marriage, wrote:

Although most people freely insert the adjective “two” in various places, this does not explain why the two-person element of the core definition of marriage can be retained, but the male-female element cannot be retained. Indeed, from a historical and traditional perspective, the leap from heterosexual to same-sex marriage is much larger than the leap from two-person unions to polyamorous unions, which have deep roots in some cultures around the world. If most people are willing to take a big step, it’s hard to see how they can refuse a shorter step.

Surprisingly, the majority’s reasoning applies to a large extent equally to claims for a fundamental right to plural marriage. if”[t]There is dignity in the bond between two men or two women seeking to marry and making such a profound choice autonomously, “Why should the bond between three people seeking to make the profound choice to marry in the exercise of their autonomy lack dignity? What if same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry because their children would “suffer the shame of knowing that their family is somehow inferior?”

According to traditional Islamic law, a Muslim man can have up to four wives at the same time. Nearly every Arab League country allows the practice, with Tunisia being the only one to ban it outright.

Now, thanks to left-wing city officials, New York may soon have its own backdoor blessing for the multi-partner lifestyle.

New York is not the first left-leaning city to act in this way. Several cities in the United States have passed ordinances protecting people in polyamorous and other non-traditional relationships from discrimination. Berkeley and Oakland were early adopters, passing similar measures in 2024. Portland’s ordinance passed unanimously and took effect in April. In 2026, West Hollywood, California, Olympia, the capital of Washington state, and Hazel Park, Michigan also passed versions. In September, Seattle became the largest city yet to pass such protections, unanimously approving its ordinance.

The bill has been referred to the Citizenship and Human Rights Committee. It is waiting for its moment to destroy the nuclear family forever.
