University of Florida freshman killed while crossing street – despite onlookers trying to save her

A University of Florida freshman was killed Saturday night while crossing a street near the university campus, even as a passing nurse tried desperately to save her.

Police say 19-year-old Hazel Krauss was struck by a car while crossing West University Avenue in Gainesville around 11:30 p.m. when the driver swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle.

Registered nurse Porchia Hardy saw Krause and rushed to help, but the freshman was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

“I’m a mother and I’m a nurse, so my mother and the nurse stepped in, and I mean she was well taken care of,” Hardy told WCJB.
