Scoring was the deciding factor in the Buffalo Bills’ Week 5 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, with the Bills’ Tyler Bass kicking a 47-yard game-winning field goal in overtime.
On the opponent side, the loss left Rams head coach Sean McVay unhappy. Los Angeles also made a big move shortly after the tough home loss, cutting their kicker Harrison Mewis.
Mewis missed two field goals during that overtime loss, first a 50-yarder in the first quarter that missed to the left. His shot later in overtime was blocked by Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau. A kick between the uprights would win the game for the Rams.
A few days after the loss, head coach Sean McVay expressed displeasure with Mewis’ shot being blocked while speaking to reporters.

“I didn’t think it was going in, I didn’t. I could be wrong, but it didn’t look like the trajectory was aligned,” McVay said.
McVay’s comments came after quarterback Matthew Stafford’s wife Kelly also appeared to express her displeasure with Mevis for losing the game. It’s been a tough week for Mewis, who was cut due to his absence and became the subject of cruel comments online.
It was another tough loss for Los Angeles, which has been the favorite to win the Super Bowl this season. They’ve since dropped to 2-3, and their division rivals the San Francisco 49ers have moved ahead of them at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Mewis has been the Rams’ kicker the past two seasons after spending one season kicking for the former Birmingham Stallions in the NFL. In five games with the Rams this season, he’s 5-for-9 from the field, or just 55.6 percent.
That blocked attempt was the first of his NFL career and came at a particularly costly moment in a big “MNF” game.
After being cut by the Rams, he was hoping to find a new team to join. Whether that’s in the NFL or elsewhere remains to be seen.
Blake Grupp now takes over as the Rams’ kicker. He played his first three seasons with the New Orleans Saints and then one season with the Indianapolis Colts. So far in his NFL career, he has taken 105 field goal attempts, hitting 86 of them and only having one shot blocked.
He has a career 60-yard kick, and the Rams hope he can provide the consistency needed to help win games.
