President Donald Trump issued a statement Saturday recognizing Reformation Day and its impact on religious freedom and the founding of the United States.
The White House released a lengthy statement commemorating the 1517 occasion when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of All Saints’ Church (castle church) in Wittenberg, Germany, and noting the impact the Protestant Reformation he initiated had on those seeking a free place to live and worship.
“From the earliest days of our republic, prayer and faith in Almighty God have been the foundation of our strength, the source of our unity, and the source of our greatness,” the president wrote. “On this Reformation Day, I extend my best wishes to countless Christians across the country, commemorating the Protestant Reformation and its enduring message of salvation through God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.”
Trump went on to share how Luther’s actions in 1517 and his efforts to get the Bible into people’s hands ultimately led to the publication of the first English version of the New Testament.
“Five hundred years ago, William Tyndale, inspired by the writings of Martin Luther, advanced the Protestant Reformation’s love of the Bible, shaped its language, and strengthened the faith and resolve of America’s founding generation by publishing the first English version of the New Testament,” he wrote. “The Bible helped form the religious beliefs that shaped our young nation’s founding ideals of God-given rights and individual liberty, a legacy we honor as we continue to reflect on the glorious 250 years of American independence.”
“The Bible remains the cornerstone of our nation’s character and supports our unwavering devotion to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Trump continued. “Guided by an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, my administration is working to restore the moral and religious foundations that have sustained our republic for generations. As president, I will always support citizens of faith, defend their place in the public sphere, and respect the enduring role our churches play in strengthening families, serving communities, and upholding the core values that have sustained us for centuries.
Of course, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump also celebrated Halloween, sharing videos of the day’s festivities as children came to the White House to trick-or-treat.
