Police in Fairfield, Calif., say they are searching for a gunman who killed one person and injured six others at a Spirit Halloween store on Friday night.
At least three victims are “currently in critical condition,” Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said at a news conference about the incident at Solano Town Center Mall, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. ET)
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this heartbreaking incident,” he said, adding that all victims had been taken to nearby hospitals. No further information was provided about the shootings.
Detectives “are working hard to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting,” Marshall said.
David Bernal told NBC News affiliate KCRA that his wife was in the store when the gunman opened fire, but she and several others managed to escape through an emergency exit.
“She’s home now and she’s still in shock,” he said, adding that she told him she heard “five bangs, big, loud.”
He added that she started running and “exited an exit on the other side of the mall.”
The incident occurred hours after another person was shot and killed inside a Spirit Halloween store in Madison Heights, Michigan.
“A 21-year-old Detroit resident was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries,” the Madison Heights Police Department said in a news release.
They later “succumbed to their injuries,” the news release said.
The gunman, a 21-year-old man, “was attacked by several bystanders while police were taking him into custody and suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” police said, adding that he had been taken to hospital.
“Based on the evidence obtained to date, investigators expect to file criminal charges in this case,” the release said.
