A crash involving a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy set off a chain-reaction crash in Commerce Thursday morning that left one person dead, according to authorities.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies received a call around 1:20 a.m. about an unconscious person in the road who was not breathing. A responding officer drove into the intersection of Atlantic and Gila avenues and hit a car, which then collided with another vehicle.
Deputies rendered aid to the injured and requested the Los Angeles County Fire Department respond to the scene, the statement said.
The driver of the first vehicle struck by police was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the second vehicle was not injured, the statement said.
The deputy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
The identities of the deputy and the victim have not been released.
According to KTLA video footage, the area was cordoned off with yellow tape during the investigation. The deputy’s vehicle also appeared to have damage to the front.
