Huntington Beach woman riding e-bike dies after hitting curb

Another e-bike rider died in Huntington Beach over the weekend, the second fatal incident involving e-bikes in the coastal city in as many months.

On Saturday around 4:30 p.m., the Huntington Beach Police Department responded to a report of an e-bike crash at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Brightwater Avenue, according to a police department news release.

Police found the e-bike rider, a 62-year-old woman from Westminster, unconscious on the road, according to a news release. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital, but she died from her injuries.

Investigators found the woman was riding eastbound on the Warner Avenue bike lane east of Brightwater Drive when she hit a raised concrete curb and fell, according to the release.

The death is the second e-bike rider killed in Huntington Beach in as many months.

On July 21, a man riding an e-bike collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Plaza Lane. Paramedics found the unconscious man on the sidewalk and took him to hospital, where he died of his injuries five days later.

In recent years, electric bicycle accidents have been on the rise. According to a study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, California e-bike riders were involved in at least 4,035 collisions between 2018 and 2024, The Times reported.

The data was analyzed through the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The data includes traffic incidents and reports filed by law enforcement agencies across the state.

The study also found that more people were injured in e-bike crashes than in collisions with conventional bikes. In most accidents, the e-bike rider is at fault.

A Los Angeles City Council panel in April proposed banning e-bikes from local trails. The Arts, Parks, Libraries and Community Enrichment Committee voted 3-0 in favor of the measure, but the proposal still needs a full City Council vote to become law.
