Laura Loomer, a conservative commentator and part-time adviser to President Donald Trump, floated herself as a potential candidate within hours of news of Zakaria’s departure.
“Hear me out: Press Secretary Laura Loomer,” she posted on X on Friday.
After former press secretary Karoline Leavitt left earlier this summer, several different candidates emerged, including CNN commentator Scott Jennings and current White House communications director Steven Cheung.
Prediction market Kalshi shows Anna Kelly, who already works on the White House communications team, as the leading potential contender, alongside Jennings and conservative author and model Elizabeth Pipko.
