Will New York host the Winter Olympics in 2042? – NBC New York

New York could be home to the Winter Olympics and Paralympics sooner than you think.

NEW LAKE PLACID – The New York City Winter Olympic and Paralympic Committee held its first meeting in New York City Monday morning to discuss the possibility of hosting the Games in New York.

The committee must figure out whether a more modern concept for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, which would be held in the Lake Placid and New York City areas, would be feasible under the IOC’s hosting requirements.

The committee has the full support of Governor Kathy Hochul and has nearly 90 members from state government, sports, business and community organizations. Hochul tasked the committee with reviewing the opportunities and challenges associated with hosting the Winter Olympics in New York in 2042.

“New York is an Olympic State. We have the history, we have the venues, and we have a passion for sports that is second to none,” Hochul said in a release.

The governor established the commission in June and is expected to explore the possibility of the state hosting it within a year.

Hochul said the exploratory committee’s study does not represent a commitment to a formal bid for the Olympics or Paralympics. She said in June that the committee would submit its findings and recommendations to the state by the end of the year.
