E-bike rider survives hit by hit-and-run driver on busy New York City street: police

An e-bike rider is still alive after being hit by a hit-and-run driver on a busy Brooklyn street Tuesday night, police said.

The 33-year-old cyclist was riding south in the right lane of Nostrand Avenue near Atlantic Avenue in Crown Heights, a busy commercial intersection, when he was struck by the driver of a white 2026 Hyundai Elantra around 7:30 p.m., police said.

Authorities said the driver of the Elantra was in the center lane and then began merging into the right lane, where the crash occurred.

The cyclist was thrown from his bike onto the sidewalk and suffered a head injury, according to police.

He was rushed to Kings County Hospital Center, where he remained in critical condition Wednesday, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai fled the scene, heading south on Nostrand Avenue and continued to abscond, police said.

The accident occurred weeks after a man riding an e-bike was struck and killed by the driver of a pickup truck in the Bronx, police and sources said.

The 50-year-old cyclist was traveling west on East 145th Street around 8:25 a.m. on Oct. 7 when a truck driver traveling south on Brooke Avenue in Mott Harbor struck him, authorities and law enforcement sources said.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 55-year-old man, remained at the scene and no charges were filed, police said.

A deliveryman was killed last month when his electric bike was struck by a dump truck and then drove off in the heart of Herald Square, according to police and an advocacy group.

The truck driver collided with the 50-year-old cyclist on the morning of Sept. 28 as the two were traveling west on West 34th Street, approaching Seventh Avenue, police said.

The woman, who was riding a JOCO rental electric bicycle to deliver goods, was pronounced dead at the scene.
