Remembering a hero: Texas mourns the death of DPS Special Forces Sgt. Sheldon after heroic battle with cancer

The Texas law enforcement community is mourning the death of Texas Special Operations Group (SOG) Staff Sergeant Sterling Matthias Shelton, who passed away on October 8, 2026. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) staff sergeant fought a courageous 15-month battle with aggressive brain cancer, which was discovered in July 2025 when he suffered a heat stroke.

DPS announced the 29-year-old’s death on Friday, prompting widespread condolences, prayers and tributes across the Lone Star State.

“The Texas Department of Public Safety mourns the passing of Staff Sergeant Sterling Shelton after a heroic battle with cancer,” the agency said in a statement posted on social media. “We honor his service and the lives he touched throughout his career. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the DPS family during this difficult time.”

Staff Sergeant Shelton dedicated seven years of his life to the DPS, four of which were spent with the elite Special Operations Group (SRT-5). On and off duty, he was known for his “extraordinary strength, determination and willingness to help others.” In July 2025, after initially experiencing heatstroke-like symptoms, a massive 6-centimetre brain tumor was discovered, which was eventually diagnosed as grade 4 astrocytoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Despite enduring multiple brain surgeries, intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Shelton continued to fight and was determined to spend as much time as possible with his wife, Raven, and their two young children, Ember Joy and Tyler Vance, according to Fox San Antonio reporter Ryan Wolf.

Sheldon’s wife, Raven, was by his side during his final days, which Sheldon spent peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends and his close-knit “Tribe 5” team.

“It has been the greatest honor and privilege to be your wife and to lead you to the other side,” Raven wrote in a heartbreaking post shared after his death. “I will tell my children about you and we will continue to move forward, carrying your strength with me every day.”

In addition to being a decorated Texas Ranger SOG Staff Sergeant, Sheldon is an avid runner, ultramarathoner and dedicated family man who takes great pride in being greeted by his wife and children when he comes home from action. He also earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu during his battle with cancer, demonstrating a lifetime of grit and resilience.

The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) also joined the state in honoring Shelton’s legacy. “Sergeant Shelton dedicated his career to serving and protecting the people of Texas,” the association said. “His commitment to duty, his fellow officers, and the communities he served will not be forgotten.”

Sheldon is survived by his wife, Raven; daughter, Amber Joy; son, Tyler Vance; his parents Brian and Stacey; and his siblings Spencer, Summer and Sierra, as well as a large law enforcement family and many loved ones.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Minton-Chartwell Funeral Home Director in Burger, Texas. Supporters urge prayers and messages of love for the Shelton family and the entire Texas DPS community as they experience the pain of losing a loyal guardian of the Lone Star State.
